Monarch FIRST Robotics FAQ for Parents

  1. What is FIRST Robotics?

FIRST Robotics is an after school activity designed to excite students about Science, Math, Technology and Engineering through the use of robotics. During a six week build season students working with professionals from the community to build a robot. We then compete at the end of March at the University of Denver. Go to http://usfirst.org for more information or contact David Clark at david.clark@bvsd.org with any questions you might have.

2. When does it meet?

We meet in the da Vinci lab every Tuesday through the fall from 3:15-4:30 to build skills, fundraise and build team cohesion. During the build season (Six weeks beginning in January) we meet M-Th from 3:15-8:00 and Saturdays, 9:30-2:30.

3. Does it cost anything?

Each student is expected to contribute a minimum of $200 to the team. This can be done either through a check brought from home or through fund raising opportunities.

4. How can I stay informed?

We have a team website at http://www.shazbots.org with frequent updates. You can also join our mailing lists:

Shazbots-parents@shazbots.org       This is an occasional mailing that goes out to parents of items of interest (dates, scholarship & internship opportunities for your child, etc)

Shazbots@shazbots.org                   This is the team mailing list that goes out to students, weekly e-mails as to that week’s agenda and such. This can get quite busy during build season.

5. How can I get more involved?

We need parents from time to time to help organize fundraising, supply meals during build season, drive to events and such.

If you are a professional in any of the fields we work with (mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, computer programmer, project manager, business & marketing professional, web designer) and would like to volunteer as a mentor, please let us know.
