
Guidelines for displaying text on a web page
People do not read text on a webpage unless they have a specific reason for doing so. You need to go out of your way to make your words accessible and easy to comprehend. Below are a few tips.
- Use Headers-break up your text into logical chunks and use header tags to indicate
levels of importance
- Use bulleted lists to outline important points
- Use a san-serif font-these have been shown to be more easily read on a computer screen
- Intersperse text with pertinent graphics-this makes it more visually interesting
- If you do have large blocks of text to display, use business format (no format, separate paragraphs by leaving a blank space between
- Use padding or margin in css to provide appropriate spacing so text in neighboring divs or images don't crowd one another
- Use highlights-links stand out naturally, link important words or concepts to make them stand out.
- Start with the conclusion-important information right at top. Seventy-nine percent of users scan, they don't read word by word
- Spell check and proof read!!! ( Shift-F7 in Design view).
